New Year's Day - 2006

1st January 2006
After a late breakfast – (the one thing about travelling in Europe in winter is that there is absolutely no need to rush breakfast and get going early because not only does everything open late but it’s still dark!) – we wander up the road and take the ‘funicular’ up to the fortress.  We spend a leisurely time exploring the ‘castle’ area before winding our way down the path to find ourselves back where we started.  We cross the Chain Bridge to the Pest side to do a bit more exploring, stop for lunch – I have Hungarian Goulash! (when in Hungary!) and as it’s now started raining we head back to the hotel for a rest before joining a cruise on the Danube – a really lovely experience.
It’s still raining at the end of our journey so we decide to head back toward the hotel – we know there is a restaurant not far from Hotel Victoria called the Pater Markus.  The entrance is deceptive and a little daunting but as we descend into the basement we find ourselves in what used to be an old monastery with Gothic style ceilings and high backed ‘monastery’ style chairs – even the waiters wear brown monk’s cassocks over their clothes.  The food is hearty and reasonably priced and, although they specialize in a huge variety of beer, we drink water!  We are back at the hotel by 9.45 and tucked up in bed by 10pm.  Apparently they had a great New Year's Eve party for a fraction of the cost!
