Edinburgh - Part 3 - New Year's Eve

31/12 – Today we started at Holyrood Castle which was really interesting – this is where Mary Queen of Scots lived and where the Queen stays when in Edinburgh.  We then wandered up the Royal Mile – Christmas shops, pubs, fudge, tartan, kilts – we decided to go back to the apartment to rest before the party ahead.  Feasting on wine and cheese in preparation for the evening ahead – doesn’t look like we’ll get dinner – all the restaurants are fully booked.  We ventured down to Princes St about 6.30pm – lots of people around, not much happening – roads have been blocked off and large screens are placed at either end of the road.  As predicted – no where to eat - but we discovered a little pub called “The Burgh”.  The girls decided to go back to the apartment then meet us at 9.30pm – Gordy and I polished off a bottle of Pipers and chatted to various people from Scotland, France and Oz.  After meeting the girls we wandered along the street and while there wasn’t much happening, there were people everywhere and the crowd just kept getting bigger.  Having decided it was all getting a bit much we decided to turn around and head back down the street ….. what a joke! This is the closest I’ll ever be to a ‘mosh pit’ – the crowd was unbelievable – we just had to surge along as best we could until the crowd eased slightly.  We stood and watched Blondie on the big screen for a while then started to move off toward home again.  Again the crowd was overwhelming – a young couple moved in front of me and literally pulled me through the crowd – the others were already ahead.  I can now understand how people can be crushed in crowds.  We were back in the apartment by 11.30pm but still saw the fireworks at midnight from our window – Spectacular!
