Christmas Eve in Salzburg

24th December
Once more we visit the markets.  Gordy and I bought shoes on the way – drank orangepunch (alchoholic) and ate sausage around a burner then took a horse and cart ride around Old Salzburg (33 euro/20 mins) – the shops etc closed about 1pm.

In the afternoon we were picked up from the hotel to do the Obendorf tour (35 euro each).  Obendorf is about 20 kms out of Salzburg and is the place where the hymn ‘Silent Night Holy Night’ was first composed and sung in 1818.  The story goes that the organ broke down and they had no music for the children on Christmas eve –the local teacher wrote the lyrics and a young priest devised the melody on his guitar.  There is an annual ceremony and the song is performed once a year at this time …… there were people everywhere!   Christmas eve we dined in the hotel restaurant.
Mozart's house - Salzburg's favourite son.
