Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein Castle

Hohenschwangau

The following morning we walked up to Hohenschwangau and did the tour of the castle built by (mad King) Ludwig’s father.  We then went by horse and cart to Neuschwanstein for the tour of Ludwig’s castle. There are only about eight rooms on view as Ludwig never finished construction.  Neuschwanstein is only about 130 years old and quite extraordinary. Ludwig was something of an eccentric genius who's passion for architecture les him to build three castles, Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and the final and most expensive, Herrenchiemsee, though he only ever completed Linderhof.  His eccentric ways led to him incur horrendous debts and he was finally declared incompetent.   The speculation that his tragic drowning at the age of 40, together with his psychiatrist, was no accident still persists to this day.  Whatever the truth, his legacy has paid off many times over since then.

During the afternoon we spent sightseeing in Fussen. Dinner that evening was against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and of course, Neuschwanstein.
