Sunday 7th January
Cab down to Battery Park and a very solemn visit to Ground Zero. This is an incredibly moving experience ……..it’s impossible to imagine what it must have been like on September 11. The emotion still seems incredibly raw and palpable and people stand solemnly, their silent tears tracking down their cheeks.
We hop another cab to Grand St where we were told there was a market. As we walk back through the Jewish section we finally do stumble on a market with stall holders selling a variety of goodies including pashminas, scarves, food etc. We continue to walk through Chinatown, Little Italy and then into Soho . There are lots of street sellers along the way, and various ‘characters’ trying to sell copy watches and bags. I can’t help myself and finally agree to purchase. A little Chinese man beckons me to follow, I can't resist, and I can hear my family scurrying behind to catch up. I am lead around the corner and into the back of a van then the door is shut! Oooops! For a moment I’m thinking I may have to say goodbye to a perfectly good kidney but when my eyes adjust to the light I suddenly find myself in handbag heaven! I purchase a ‘Coach’ handbag and wallet for $50 and I’m just getting ready to hit on the Pradas when Gordon bangs on the side of the van and the vendor and I both almost have a heart attack! After all that excitement we find a very cute coffee shop in Soho and stop for lunch.
