Thursday 13/01 – hailed a couple of cabs to take us to Gare Lyon for the next leg of our journey to Beaune. The apartment in Paris was lovely and very well situated – not huge but cosy – just on the corner was a lovely park and only two minutes from Rue St Michel. The cost in 2005 was $2,360.
We have to change trains in Dijon to travel onto Beaune, which is about 20 minutes away. We were met at the station by Ben Martin, the owner of the apartment, who transported us all, together with our luggage plus some random woman (Lisa from WA) who’d started chatting to us at Dijon. The apartment was the best yet. Set in a 12th century abbey it was very spacious, set on three levels and extremely well equipped. A place you could stay in comfortably long term – even English videos.
We explored the village centre – every second shop sold wine – every other shop sold chocolates and cake!! If I lived here I'd quickly become a big, fat alcoholic! We found a ‘boucharie’ that sold wonderful terrines, quiches etc and bought an array of goodies, bread and a bottle of red…… delicious! Later, Gordy and I went for another stroll around Beaune – the fairy lights lined the streets and sparkled above as we walked down the mall and the shops were all beautifully presented – pristine and inviting.
