Tuesday 21st December – We decide to visit the only castle that Ludwig ever completed – Linderhof Schloss. The drive takes us into Austria and it is just so picturesque – snow drenched trees and mountains reflected in still lakes bordered by a very windy road. We see a lot of cross-country skiers along the way.

Can you imagine what would happen if she slipped? |

The opulence is astounding. There is even a hall of mirrors! |
Linderhof, by comparison to the castles we’ve just seen is quite small but extremely elaborate. Based on Versailles it is almost a monument to Louis XIV and the French nobility. The detail is exquisite – Meissen porcelain – ivory chandeliers – ornate gold table pieces – extraordinary! Being the eccentric that he was, Ludwig never wanted to see his servants, so he installed a 'magic' dining table, whereby the floor opened and the table was lowered to the kitchen beneath then sent back up to the dining room covered with food. He even had hot and cold running water!
