Finally arrive at Penn Station. As we enter from underground there are no lights, no glitz and glamour so I'm feeling mildly put out ……… not until we step out onto the street that is! A cab ride to the Buckingham Hotel – on 57th between 6th & 7th – the location is great.
The room at the Buckingham consists of a bedroom, lounge and galley kitchen – there is a microwave and a full size fridge, toaster and coffee maker, but no kettle. Across the road is a ‘Duane Reade’ Pharmacist. Unlike the Pharmacies we are accustomed to, they are open 24/7 and have mostly grocery lines. The Duane Reade on the corner of 57th and 8th or 9th has a 24 hour pharmacist.
As you leave the hotel turn right and Angelo’s Coal Fired Pizza is about 50 metres down the road. Diagonally across the road is ‘Rue 57’, open breakfast through to dinner. I ordered an appetiser of mussels – (American’s call our entrée an appetiser and main course is entrée) thinking I’d receive just a few – for $11.75 they brought me a bucket with about 50 mussels!
On our first night we head down to the right from the hotel entrance a couple of blocks to a market where we purchase juice, coffee, fruit etc. then stop at Angelo’s for pizza.
