Arriving in Edinburgh we finally make it to our apartment in Regent Terrace - great location and a very nice, spacious apartment. Once settled we walked into town for dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. After dinner we watched the “Torch Parade” where a group of men, dressed as Vikings or wearing traditional Scottish kilts (it was freezing!) pull a replica of a “Viking” boat along Princes Street, up to behind where we were staying – a very high area overlooking Edinburgh. Thousands of people followed carrying lit torches – these were not protected flames – these were literally huge candles all blazing wildly – NO health and safety issues here! Upon reaching the summit, the boat was set upon a mound, accompanied by lots of singing and blowing of bagpipes and then the boat was finally set alight! It took a few attempts but finally after about 10 – 15 minutes the boat and bonfire were wildly ablaze – at this stage we decided to move downhill (for fear of being set alight) when the fireworks started! These were amazing – better than the Ekka – and in keeping with the theme of the night – NO safety barriers of course. Amazing!
