Sunday morning and the water taxi is supposedly booked for 9.30am – 20 minutes later he still hasn’t arrives so we take the Vaporetti which is actually easier to get on and off with our luggage and only costs E25 instead of E55. This is our last train ride with luggage – we leave Venice at 10.32 and due to arrive in Rome at 3.05.
Our apartment in Rome is literally just around the corner from the Trevi Fountain – the first day we stare in awe ……. by the 3rd or 4th day we are saying “ho hum ….. the Trevi” We climb every step of the Colisseum, wonder at the Pantheon, traipse through the Roman Forum, marvel at the Vatican and are totally overawed by St Peter’s Basilica. Rome is truly a wonderland of antiquities and I’m sure the Romans don’t appreciate it.
Our audience with the Pope :) |
The Pieta - this is truly one of Michelangelo's most stunning works. Just think - he was only 24 when commissioned to do this. |
The rubbing of St Peter's foot supposedly brings good luck! Poor old thing's toes are being rubbed away. |
