We have breakfast at the hotel then head
off to Perigueux. The roads are quite
good with a 110kph speed limit. The
first hour is mainly all freeways after that we tend to be going through
smaller towns, which slows us down, plus sooo many roundabouts!
It takes about 2hrs 40 mins to reach our
destination and thankfully the car park is very easily accessible! Perigueux is a beautiful town with lots of
wine, cheese and chocolate shops along with beautiful little gift stores. I went into one where you walked down at
least four levels with quaint little gifts everywhere – a true Aladdin’s
cave. After quite a bit of exploring we
decided to find a place for some R & R – remembering that many restaurants
close down for the afternoon while everyone takes a ‘siesta’. After exploring many of the streets we
finally stopped at a little bar and I asked if they were still serving food and
wine! Mais oui! The annual auction was held today and it
turns out our host had purchased the most expensive truffle ….2000 euros!! He brought out all his newly purchased truffles
for us to admire and, let me say, it was very impressive! GC ordered a truffle omelette while I settled
for foie gras. Our chef was also
featured in a book dedicated to “Le Foie Gras” and showed us his own recipe, so
I bought the foie gras and the book, which he signed. On his suggestion we booked Chez Nico for
dinner, so we went back to our room for some R & R before heading out again
for dinner. Tres magnifique! I had a veloute, followed by carpaccio and
finished with crème brulee while Gordy had a prawn dish followed by boeuf
bourguignon. It was all lovely.
