Beautiful Beaune - 04/01/13

After our coffee and croissants we are off to the Hotel Dieu - Hospice de Beaune.  Built to care for the poor in 1443 this operated as a hospital for over 500 years caring for its last patient in the 1980s.  65 hectares of vineyards were donated to the hospital and each year the wines would be auctioned with all proceeds going to the hospital.  This still occurs annually.  A feature of this beautiful building is the coloured tiled roof, which is really stunning.

Lunch was followed by a wine tour with 'Safari Tours'.  This took us north toward Dijon through many of the best wine producing areas (one vineyard sells their wine for 5000 euros per bottle!) with the obligatory wine tasting thrown in at the end.  Wine really is the lifeblood of France with vineyards passed down through the generations and still worked by the families.

Have decided to ship some things back to Brisbane....only about 13 - 14 kilos but it might lighten the load a little.  Gordy is worried that I am simply making room for more shopping....ridiculous!  (However I did just go and buy a set of beautiful Claude Dozorme steak knives.)

Burning off the pruned vine branches

This is why I have already made my booking with my nutritionist!
Gordy in '7th heaven' - each barrel holds 300 bottles!
This is part of an unbelievable light show projected onto the front of the church

Tonight we went to dinner at Le Relais de Saulz - chef Thierry Lenko.  The food was delicious.... Salade with Jambon Serrano, prawns and parmesan, jambon persille, a divine chicken dish and Gordy had (another) Beef Burgundy! He's been averaging at least one per day if not two!

Profiteroles!   Yum......

All washed down with  beautiful vino!
