Day 11 - Tallinn - Christmas eve

A beautiful breakfast in the hotel to start the day.  The service here is impeccable - the staff are unbelievably helpful.... and you gotta love a place that serves you champagne for breakfast!

We are being met at 11.00am to do a walking tour of the city.  Tallinn, capital of Estonia, is one of the best preserved Medieval cities in Europe and is heritage listed by UNESCO.   Amazingly it has the highest number of startups per capita in Europe - SKYPE actually started here!   It is quite a flat area so easy to traverse and as we follow our guide, he gives a well informed description of all the points  of interest.  Fabulous examples of Medieval homes - they are not wide as you were taxed on how much street frontage you occupied.   He also fills us in on the chequered history of Tallinn having been occupied by the Danes, Swedes, Germans, Russians but they finally received their independence in August 1991.  When the Russians were here in the 1980s Tallinn became the centre for the Olympic regattas so there are several buildings dedicated to the Olympics that are still in use today, including the television tower, though this is now just a tourist attraction.

I would recommend our guide:   Mati Rumessen (+372 50 94 661) .  mati700@hot.ee  www.tourservice.ee

Tonight we dined in the Tchaikovsky Restaurant and both the food and the service were sensational!
