Well here we go again! The departure date comes around so quickly that a little melancholy sets in knowing it will all be over in a few short weeks! Anyhow .....
Dec 18 - our departure time from Brisbane to Adelaide is set for 12.35pm but due to a few issues, we don't take off until 1.00pm - it's finally happening ..... no wait .... a little while into the flight there is a medical emergency and we have to head back!
Take two! - Up and 'flying' again by 3.00pm and it's a smooth flight down to Adelaide. Our bag have been checked in all the way through to Frankfurt so we head off by Uber to visit my cousin Josie. Dinner together then back to her daughter's house for a quick bottle of Veuve, then back out to the airport. Our 777 to Dubai is sensational. Service is fabulous, flight is so smooth - I even manage a few hours sleep, helped by the fact that they supply a mattress for your bed - so it really is very comfortable - I don't care what it sounds like .... if I can't fly Business on a long haul flight .... I ain't going! Dubai airport is HUGE! No wonder they have a weekly show on its activities! The lounge is second to none with a variety of food, coffee bars, ice cream trucks, bars .... you name it! A quick shower to freshen up and then Moet to will away the time before our next leg. We are on an A380 to Frankfurt .... seats not quite as roomy but still very nice and, let's face it, when you can stand at a bar 34,000 ft high drinking Veuve .... who's complaining?
We arrive at Terminal 2 and after collecting our bags, we catch the shuttle bus to Terminal 1 where we head straight to the train station for our next leg to Wurzburg. The Europcar office is closed so off to the city to pick up our car. It's now dark and we have been travelling for about a day and a half! Luckily we took the correct turn out of the garage and are soon on our way to Rothenburg. Speed limit is 100 but most drivers leave me in their dust! That's OK - I'm tired, I'm sitting on the left hand side of the car, driving in the right lane and more than a little nervous. I do get a few annoyed 'toots' when on the country roads but I will not be intimidated!! Finally make it into Rothenburg but our lady of the GPS doesn't account for all the 'closed' roads due to Christmas markets. It's also more than a little nerve wracking when you are suddenly driving in narrow cobbled streets that you're not quite sure are roads or pathways! With my stomach now completely in knots I park the car on the street (pedestrians DO NOT move!) and walk to the hotel. After checking in, our little porter comes back to the car with us and directs us to the garage .... couldn't have done it without him! The markets close at 7.00pm so we stay in the hotel for dinner - by this time slightly delirious - then straight to bed!
