In the taxi our driver informs
us that the Hotel Die Swaene, where we are staying is one of the most romantic hotels in the whole Bennelux
area……… and he is absolutely correct. It
is extremely beautiful, right on the canal and the first few moments in our
room is made perfect when we see three snow white swans glide gracefully passed
our window. Anxious to embrace the
romanticism of the city, we immediately set off to walk the cobbled streets and
soak up the ambience of this magical city.
The surrounding cathedrals and towers reflect in the glow of the winter
lights and you can understand why this magnificent city has been declared a
national heritage sight by UNESCO.
The time is getting on and we are quickly discovering that most restaurants don’t want hungry travellers at 10.30pm at night! Our search however, is not in vain and we eventually discover a quaint little restaurant open, and serving meals, until 3am! We both decide on the ‘menu of the day’ and tuck into warming soup, beef pie and chocolate mousse all washed down with a bottle of wine!
