Reims

It is only about a 30 minute journey and we are both convinced we are going to another small township, how wrong we are!  Along the way the countryside is awash with field upon field of vines each plot identified by a single stone signpost stating the champagne house to which they belong.  Reims is a large city with a rich history and culture and we are booked into the Hotel de la Paix, a modern hotel in the middle of town.

A visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral where Joan of Arc’s life is commemorated is a must.  A wonderful example of French Gothic architecture this cathedral rivals it’s namesake in Paris. Built in the 13th century it has a remarkable history.

This evening we have decided to stay in and so head down to the restaurant in the hotel for dinner.  My choice is half a dozen escargots followed by grilled salmon, while Gordy, who has developed quite a taste for the French snail, orders a dozen followed by a steak.  I also indulge in a desert of dark berry sorbet resting in a glass filled with champagne and cassis……..divine!

Joan of Arc
During dinner we strike up a conversation with two gentlemen at the next table – in France you are never far from your fellow diners! They are commercial pilots who fly celebrities and the like around the world.  The whisper is that Prince Albert and his billionaire friend have been boar shooting and the next day they are being flown back to Monte Carlo. What a life!
